The center’s name celebrates the legacy of Reverend Dr. Alger L. Adams, the first African American graduate of Hobart and William Smith Colleges.

The "IC" has been a welcoming space for students and alumni, providing support for personal growth, academic achievement, and leadership development. It also offers programs that promote cross-cultural understanding, diversity and inclusion, while strengthening community bonds. The recent renovation aimed to meet the needs of students and club populations while maintaining the comforting atmosphere of a home away from home. The renovated and expanded space has further enhanced the Colleges' partnerships with various nonprofit organizations in Geneva and the Finger Lakes region.
